Cambridge sciences
Cambridge sciences are available in a wide range of subjects and options to suit different abilities and career aspirations. Students can select the subjects they love and are best at, which helps motivate them throughout their studies.
What can learners study?
Cambridge sciences are typically for learners aged 14 to 19 years, starting with Cambridge IGCSE or Cambridge O Level and leading on to Cambridge International AS & A Level. As well as individual science subjects like biology, chemistry and physics, students can choose a combined or joint award syllabus where two or three subjects are studied together.
The syllabuses combine theoretical and practical learning. They provide a solid foundation for learners who already have a career path in mind and need to specialise while at school, before progressing to university. Cambridge sciences are also perfect for learners who want to develop skills so that they are ready for their next steps in education or employment, whether or not they go on to study science beyond this level.
Develop knowledge and skills
Cambridge sciences encourage creative thinking and problem-solving skills, which are transferable to any future career. They are designed to build understanding of scientific concepts and introduce learners to the theory that underpins different scientific disciplines.
Practical skills
Universities want to see evidence that a student has undertaken practical work during their science studies at school.
Our science syllabuses allow plenty of time to nurture practical skills. Teaching provides lots of opportunity to engage with the subject practically and assessments include a mix of theoretical and practical components.
Managing practical exams
At Cambridge International, practicals not only form part of the syllabus, but also the assessment. Schools can choose between a practical test and, in the case of Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge O Level, an alternative to practical exam that is a written paper.
We understand that some schools might not have enough equipment or space for all of their learners to take a practical exam at the same time. These schools can arrange one or more exam sessions on the same day so that the practical assessment may be taken by several groups in different sessions. Because students develop appropriate practical skills, they can be sure that their qualification will give them the best chance of getting in to the university of their choice.
International recognition
Cambridge sciences give students a solid foundation for progression, providing them with the knowledge and skills sought by universities and employers across the world.

Teachers can draw on a wide range of supporting materials, including endorsed textbooks aligned with each syllabus.
